Ok, so I found out today that the HTC One X has a safe mode that I accidentally went into when trying to get to recovery mode.
I’d held the volume – button down whilst holding the power button down until the 3 icons at the bottom of the screen flashed, and when nothing happened I simply powered up the phone to have it come up with ‘Safe Mode’ overlaid at the bottom left of the screen.
In safe mode, you can only use preinstalled apps, so none of my 3rd party apps would work.
So I rebooted figuring it would go away, but it didn’t, which led to several minutes of frantic Googling and minor panic.
As it happens, the answer didn’t come from Google, but from my own brain 🙂
So, I figured that it was only fair to share with the world at large, so here we go:-
Power off your phone and wait for the screen to shut off.
Hold down the power button until the 3 icons at the bottom flash and release the power button.
The phone will still be off, now power it on normally and safe mode will be turned off.
This worked for me, hopefully it will for others too, since with the One X there is no option to remove the battery!!
100 % workable …. thnks
🙂
Glad It helped somebody else 🙂
Thank you it done the trick for me

Thank you for your help! Worked the first time.
Glad it helped 🙂
Glad it helped 🙂
thanks it worked!! 🙂
it is not working for me. it may just be im not a tech smart person, or the phone may have bigger problems. thank you for the answer though. it was worth a try. 🙂
Sorry to hear it didn’t work, it is worth trying several times tough, to make sure you leave the icons flashing long enough.
I don’t know if this works for any other HTC phones, as I don’t have any I can test with, but It worked for sure for my One X.
Hope you can get it resolved.
Worked on the third attempt. Just need to leave those icons flashing for long enough. Thanks for the fix. I was worried for a while!
Cool, glad this is helping people 🙂
Trying to get into safe mode and this method is not working for me. have tried several times, but the icons can only flash for so long, before the phone restarts (after three seconds). Once it restarts – it is just normal mode.
I did find out that if you hold the volume button down in both ends and hold the power button down, it will come up with a screen that allows to choose “fast boot”, “recovery”, and to other modes that I dont remember.
This doesn’t seem to work for all, so I guess it may be down to firmware levels.
The trick of holding down the volume up/down works and gives me Fastboot, Recovery, Factory Reset, Simlock, Show Barcode and Image CRC menu options, though I haven’t fully explored these as I have had no need.
What I can say is that if you select ‘Recovery’, once you get a screen showing a phone with a red warning triangle above it, there are a whole host of other options available if you then press volume up and power at the same time. I think this is probably common to most Android devices, as I get an almost identical screen on my Nexus 7, with the same options, and have had similar on other phones/tablets. My Galaxy S2 for work is different, you have to hold down volume up (though when it works seems a little random), home and power, but that gets to the recovery menu.
Clearly there are things here that have the potential to mess up your phone, so use at your own risk.
after u do safemode do u still have to put your password in
You should not have to, at least that was the case for me.
